Environmental groups filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to stop the Sabal Trail natural gas pipeline that would run through Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.
Different groups, including the Sierra Club, filed the suit just following the federal regulators’ approval of the pipeline, which meant a permit approval to discharge dredge materials into wetlands and other water bodies.
The lawsuit says that the pipeline project poses a threat to the region’s drinking water supply.
The Sabal Trail, a $3.2-billion natural gas pipeline, is a joint venture between Spectra Energy, Duke Energy, and Florida Power & Light. The project has an estimated construction date of 2017.
